Connecting Language, Art, and the Natural Environment.

Alcuin School’s new World Language and Fine Arts Building marks the first major project implemented from the school’s 2015 campus master plan. The 16,000-square-foot facility embodies the school’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship through the use of natural, warm, and recycled materials. Expansive exterior windows slow the daily rhythm of movement across campus, inviting students to pause, observe, and engage with the displays of art, language, and performance that celebrate their collective creativity. Exterior stairs and covered walkways further enhance campus connectivity while integrating seamlessly with Alcuin’s intimate and well-loved architectural fabric.

The building houses eight language classrooms, a music classroom, and two art studios that open directly to the outdoors—strengthening the connection between learning and the natural environment. On the upper level, a flexible outdoor learning terrace extends the classroom experience, providing space for collaboration, quiet study, and social connection. The covered patio, with its strategically placed roof openings, allows daylight to filter through and animate the space throughout the day. From this elevated terrace, students gain new perspectives of both the campus and their role within it.

As the first step in Alcuin’s evolving campus vision, the World Language and Fine Arts Building embodies the school’s philosophy of learning through exploration, creativity, and connection—establishing a thoughtful balance between nature, community, and academic expression.

“This building has only come about through the design team’s intrinsic ability to listen to the myriad thoughts and opinions of our various stakeholders and to coalesce those into integrated themes and designs that appeal across a broad spectrum.”

— Lochwood Larson, Chief Financial Officer, Alcuin School
