A Forward-Thinking Elementary School Shaped by Concept, Creativity, and Collaboration.
At the onset of planning for the new 120,000-square-foot Rolling Hills Elementary School, the district challenged the design team to move beyond traditional models and support its forward-thinking educational goals. The resulting design reimagines the elementary school experience, creating a distinctive and flexible hub for learning that responds to the evolving needs of students and educators. Emphasizing transparency, abundant natural light, and strong connections to the outdoors, the school fosters openness, well-being, and an engaging environment that supports both learning and community. Thoughtfully organized learning neighborhoods and shared spaces encourage collaboration, adaptability, and a sense of belonging. Together, these elements create an inspiring setting that empowers students and teachers while reflecting the district’s commitment to innovative education.
Situated on a site that slopes more than thirty feet from top to bottom, the school leveraged its topography to shape a unique and efficient plan that responds naturally to the landscape. The main entry level and public bar—home to Administration, the Cafeteria, a Multi-Purpose Room, and a Gymnasium—aligns with the highest point of the site, forming a strong civic presence and a buffer to the residential neighborhood to the west. Beyond this public bar, the plan opens into the school’s signature split-level Media Center, framed by two interior courtyards that extend adjacent learning environments outdoors and introduce daylight deep into the building.
From this central hub, Core Academic wings radiate outward, each interspersed with indoor and outdoor collaboration pods that foster student engagement, flexibility, and informal learning. Their splayed arrangement not only creates a dynamic learning environment but also shields outdoor play areas and learning pavilions at both the north and south edges of the campus, enhancing safety while reinforcing a seamless connection between indoor instruction and outdoor activity. This intentional organization reinforces clear wayfinding, maximizes use of the sloped site, and creates a cohesive campus experience that balances functionality, security, and a strong sense of place.
“We challenged Glenn|Partners to design a next-generation ready school building that would bring innovative design to our Westpark community. The design for the new elementary school far exceeds those expectations! I am confident this building will be a point of pride for Fort Worth ISD and win recognition statewide.”
