Inspiring Leadership and Innovation Through STEM, Justice, and Engaging Community Connections.

Westwood Middle School is Richardson ISD’s new 204,500-square-foot replacement campus, designed to modernize and expand the district’s former junior high facility. Developed to meet the needs of a growing student population—including the addition of sixth grade and expanded academic magnet programs—the new school is thoughtfully planned on the existing site, adjacent to the original campus.

The design emphasizes student engagement, connectivity, and collaboration, fostering a vibrant environment where learning extends beyond the classroom. At the heart of the campus, the cafeteria and media center—inspired by the school’s wolf mascot—serve as dynamic social hubs akin to a “wolf den.” These spaces act as both horizontal and vertical connectors, drawing students together throughout the day and reinforcing a sense of community. From the upper floors, students overlook the central “den,” creating a strong visual and social connection across levels. The school’s colors are woven throughout the interior to enhance wayfinding, celebrate identity, and instill pride and belonging.

Surrounding the central hub are collaborative zones, CTE labs, and magnet-focused classrooms, while core academic wings are positioned along the perimeter to provide quieter, focused learning environments. The campus features state-of-the-art CTE facilities and specialized magnet programs in leadership, health science, legal and criminal justice, computer science, mathematics, and science, offering students hands-on experiences aligned with real-world career pathways.

Expansive windows flood interior spaces with natural light, while outdoor learning terraces on the second and third floors extend learning into the open air. Located on the north and south sides, these terraces are connected by a central corridor that provides clear sightlines and views of the surrounding neighborhood. Athletics and performing arts spaces occupy the first floor, with direct access to athletic fields, tennis courts, and outdoor plazas designed for both learning and recreation. The result is a cohesive, community-centered campus that reflects the energy and pride of Westwood’s students—an environment that inspires collaboration, nurtures exploration, and connects learning with the world beyond the classroom.

“The design team truly led with vision and collaboration. Their ability to translate our educational goals into a modern, student-centered environment has redefined what a middle school can be—flexible, inspiring, and deeply connected to the community. ”
